Walnut Gallery kicks off 2011 with an amazing collection of photography entitled “Solomon’s House” by Sarah Cusimano Miles. An opening reception and gallery talk will be held Friday, January 14th from 7 to 9 pm. Admission is free and open to the public. The exhibition, sponsored by Holiday Inn Express & Suites, will be on display at Walnut Gallery from January 14th to February 11th.
“Solomon’s House” features photographs of specimens taken from the Anniston Museum of Natural History’s dark storage. Sarah Cusimano Miles has taken these objects from their usual resting places – bottles, shelves, drawers – and explored them in a luminous, traditional still-life style that highlights “the often disturbing and exquisite elegance” of the mostly forgotten organisms, Cusimano Miles said. In addition, many of these photographs are comprised of numerous single images combined into one high-resolution composite image; a technique that permits a level of detail and resolution not possible through a single exposure. “The richness and textures Sarah has achieved in these images must be seen first-hand to appreciate,” said Mario Gallardo, Executive Director of Walnut Gallery. “It’s a collection of beautiful photographs of subjects that aren’t what you’d immediately consider beautiful.”
Sarah Cusimano Miles is a native of Gadsden, Alabama where she has been an exhibiting artist, photographer, and educator for almost twenty years. She currently teaches at Jacksonville State University where she has contributed to the transition of the traditional film-based photography program to a digital-based curriculum, and also maintains a commercial photography business based in Gadsden.
